A camera project has several separate milestones: correct wiring, sensor detection, successful capture, and an image that is useful for the application. Treating them separately makes troubleshooting much easier.
ArmSoM’s Camera Module 1 compatibility list includes Sige3, Sige5, Sige7, LM7/W3, CM5 and AIM7. For module-based systems, the carrier configuration matters too. The list is a starting point—not a guarantee that every cable, connector or operating-system image will work unchanged.
1. Verify the physical connection with power removed
Check the board or carrier model, camera connector, cable type and contact orientation against the relevant documentation. Similar-looking ribbon connectors are not sufficient evidence of compatibility. Do not insert or remove the camera ribbon while the board is powered.
If you need help, photograph the connection with power off, making the connector labels and cable orientation visible.
2. Match the software to the hardware
Use the camera instructions for your exact board and image. Confirm whether a sensor driver, device-tree configuration or image-specific camera setup is required.
Avoid copying an overlay name from another board merely because it uses the same sensor. Record the image filename and kernel version before changing anything, and keep a backup of configuration files you edit.
3. Prove capture before adding the application
Start with the documented capture example and a supported mode. Do not assume that /dev/video0 is the camera stream you need; device numbering and pipeline layout can vary.
Separate “the sensor was detected” from “frames were captured.” Then inspect the image for focus, exposure, orientation and color before introducing an AI model, encoder or streaming service. A preview failure and a capture failure are not necessarily the same problem.
4. Make the next experiment small
Keep lighting and the test scene fixed while changing one setting at a time. Record resolution, frame rate and pixel format with each result.
A reproducible first frame provides a foundation for inspection, robotics or other vision experiments. If you are stuck, share the board/carrier revision, image, cable arrangement, capture command and exact error. Remove credentials, private scenes and unrelated personal data from logs and images before posting.
